Finally, after my last movie, which was Wall-E (did I mention that I bought a bloody expensive Wall-E toy?), I caught another movie - Painted Skin.
Well, not that I went into the cinema with high expectations but the experience was not very nice yesterday. On top of a stupid woman beside me who kept asking the bf questions about the show, there were alot others who were talking in the cinema. Is it really so hard for them to keep their mouth shut for 2 hours? Or at least have the decency to whisper? I was so tempted to turn to the woman beside me and ask her to use her own brains and eyes to enjoy the show and shut up! And many phones were ringing! It was indeed a damn noisy cinema. I'll refrain from going to Marina Square for movie anymore. But that is not really the point, let's move back to the movie..
So, the movie is supposedly adapted from a story in Liaozhai but the storyline is very much different. I shall not touch on that since adaptations are usually just something to make people more interested in something and usually do not hold much of the original meaning or impact. But visually, I'm very much puzzled by the producer or whoever-in-charge's decision. It is supposed to be a Chinese show with the ever-popular and ever-present fox demon BUT the costumes and makeup look Japanese. The women wore kimonos, the men/generals wore samurai style armour and the makeup of the demons look like characters out of a Noh theatre - whitefaced, eyebrowless and very "grounded". I say "grounded" because I think Chinese demons are quite "flowy" like 倩女幽魂 type. Fly all over the place with long, thin, silky train of cloth.
As that, I left the cinema yesterday irritated, tired and puzzled. It's too much for my small brain.
