In a span of 3 weeks, I've been to both the zoo and the night safari. It seems like to ask others to go the zoo is such a ridiculous idea that I am the only suitable candidate for this particular type of outing. After my trips to the zoo, I find myself thinking of the purpose of them and whether they serve a positive or negative purpose. And I find myself unable to take a stand. Is it cruel to lock animals up in enclosures, claiming to be protecting them from the ravages of their natural habitats when in actual fact it only benefit ourselves? Or is it really helping that we are bringing wild animals back to save them from extinction? How is it that we are claiming to protect the animals from extinction when we are the ones who are destroying their natural habitats for our own benefits? How is it that we bring back the wild animals claiming to protect them from extinction when it is partly for our own enjoyment of seeing them in zoos? BUT How do we stop the others who are destroying their natural habitats? How do we stop others who will stop at nothing to add to their own benefits? How do we learn and know more about the animals if there are no zoos? Even if you claim that you can learn about them from the web, the information can only be obtained by bringing the animals back for study.
I wonder how many people are sharing similar dilemma as me.
