Since when did we start discriminating people from China? Why did it amount to such a situation? China, the place where most of our ancestors hail from and one of the biggest countries in the world, is often seen as so much less in the eyes of many Singaporeans. I admit that there are some PRCs who really tarnish the names of their country but who can loudly say that there is no one in their country who would also tarnish the reputation of their countrymen? Stereotypes are very vicious things. They can stay in people's minds for ages without being altered. Very often, the stereotypes are only applicable to a small handful but it doesn't matter to others who think otherwise. It is so much easier to group everyone under the same category. Saves some people their non-existent brain cells that actually do some thinking. It is totally hopeless. And it actually takes a lot to change people's perception and the stereotyped impression that is ingrained into people's minds. Reason for this sudden burst of righteousness, if you can call it, was partly because a friend sent me a link on a forum in which some random girl started a random thread topic with the sole purpose of lashing out at PRC girls for the slightest irrelevant stuff. If you guys are interested, read it here. Another reason for the many ideas on stereotypes is that I once had to watch 2 films and write an essay about how films changed or further reinforced certain stereotypes. And of course, it is time for me to contribute something intellectual instead of boring people with what my life is all about.
