Life is so full of choices. Everyday, no matter what we do, we have to make choices. Be it trivial ones like choosing what your lunch should consist of or important choices like deciding if you should really devote the rest of your life to another person, aka marriage. Those are just some of the few examples which people will have to make choices. Of course, I am not exception either. Take for example today, I had to choose between job-seeking with jones, shopping with chongwei or just go out with my mum. In the end, my mum won, mainly because she was the first to ask. Haha. Ok, that is not exactly the point. My point all the time we will have to make choices and it happens everyday, to everyone.
Wondering why am I suddenly talking about choices? Because I think that the freedom to choose confuses people, especially ordinary people like me. First things first, I have the freedom to choose the kind of job I would like to have. It may seem nice to be able to choose but it is precisely due to the enormous number of choices I can choose from that confuses me, making me lose my direction and how I want to do things. People think that by having the freedom and ability to make choices, they would be the one controlling their lives and their own destiny. However, I really do not think so. The only time when you could control your life when you are making choices is the moment when you are choosing the path you want to take. That's all. End of story. Why? Because everything that happens after that will no longer be in your control. Instead, you will have to adjust yourself according to the circumstances. If you have to adapt, is it still considered that you could control your life? Kind of contradicting, isn't it? But again, humans are contradicting creatures. They make up all sorts of logics, theories and excuses about how they are in control of their lives and destiny and how superior they are. So what? If you think about those things seriously and more in depth, do you really think that humans are really as powerful and high and mighty as we claim to be?
Yes, we have evolved from the barbarians to become who we are now: highly motivated, technologically advanced and achieving many things which were thought to be impossible in the past. We have also prided ourselves in our vast improvement in the social sense but ironically, despite everything that we have now, I think people in the past had a better life. They did not have the freedom of choice so they did not have to worry about making the wrong choices. Their lives were simple and direct. Unlike the world today where almost everyone is plotting to go against everyone else. All these troubles and inconvenience are caused by...yes I think you have the answer now: choice. For example, people can now climb up the social and promotion ladder faster if they choose the easy way, backstabbing others and bootlick managers. In other aspects of the society, such unbecoming behaviour could also be found. So tell me, do you really think that having choices are good? Of course, there are also advantages of having choices but I am not going to list them, considering the headaches and confusion the huge number of choices I am facing is giving me. Haha.
